A summer job is a great way to try on different career options and determine what you are really interested in. For example, you may think you want to work in the retail clothing industry. The often generous employee discount, a glamorous mall or large shopping center setting, getting to visit with your friends while they shop; only to discover you hate the long hours, the constant tidying of garments and your friends only come by to try to use your discount. But you’ll never know unless you experience it for yourself.
Next consider your schedule keeping already previously made commitments in mind. Then stop and think about your lifestyle. Not a morning person? This shows you have initiative, can complete tasks and have specific skills. Also, include three references your prospective employer can follow up with. Just make sure to ask the person ahead of time if it’s ok to include them.
Once you have determined what positions you want to apply for go online and read up on their hiring practices. Some businesses, especially those with a Help Wanted sign in the front window, generally expect you to apply in person with resume in hand; while others prefer and/or require an online application. Dress neatly and professionally anytime you will be meeting a prospective employer in person. If you begin with a phone interview speak clearly and be polite.
