Whether a high school student, an educator with the summer off, or a seasonal worker, it’s that time of the year again…time to start preparing for your summer job hunt.

  • Begin by getting your life behind the scenes in order. This means obtaining a work permit if necessary, lining up references, updating your resume, writing a winning cover letter, and taking the time to decide on exactly what type of summer position you are interested in. It’s always practical to focus your attention on positions that may align with your future career path.
  • Once you narrow down your interests begin applying for as many positions as possible. Remember, while there are numerous summer employment opportunities available, often employers hire quickly to ensure they have all positions filled before the summer rush.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to family and friends for job leads, and check online job boards daily. Many high schools and colleges have career service websites. Or connect with a reputable staffing agency. Then, last but not least, pound the pavement. Both mom & pop shops along with national chains often still place a “help wanted” sign in the window instead of dealing with online applications.
  • That said, today the majority of hiring does begin with the internet. Job applications are filled out online. Cover letters and resumes are sent via email. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make an effort to introduce yourself in person. A few days after submitting your online application stop by and ask for the hiring manager. Shake their hand and let them know you recently sent in an application and would like to be considered for the position. This puts a face to a name and shows a potential employer you are willing to go the extra mile.
  • When you do get an in-person interview remember to dress professionally and neatly. Be punctual. Bring an extra copy of your resume. Be friendly and polite. Finally after every interview send a personal thank you note
