Start Planning Now for Your Summer Job

A summer job is a great way to try on different career options and determine what you are really interested in. For example, you may think you want to work in the retail clothing industry. The often generous employee discount, a glamorous mall or large shopping center setting, getting to visit with your friends while they shop; only to discover you hate the long hours, the constant tidying of garments and your friends only come by to try to use your discount. But you’ll never know unless you experience it for yourself.

Next consider your schedule keeping already previously made commitments in mind. Then stop and think about your lifestyle. Not a morning person? Don’t bother applying for a server position at a breakfast restaurant. Allergic to dogs? Skip the kennel assistant application at your local veterinarian’s office. Of course, it is important to remember with school out soon, competition for certain jobs may become fierce and it may be necessary for you to step outside your comfort zone depending on what is available in your area.

Now work on your resume or CV. Don’t fret if you have no prior experience. Simply focus on your educational highlights along with extracurricular activities. Make note of volunteer duties, special hobbies and internships. If you babysit, walk the neighbor’s dog or mow their grass, these are all jobs you should include. This shows you have initiative, can complete tasks and have specific skills. Also, include three references your prospective employer can follow up with. Just make sure to ask the person ahead of time if it’s ok to include them.

Once you have determined what positions you want to apply for go online and read up on their hiring practices. Some businesses, especially those with a Help Wanted sign in the front window, generally expect you to apply in person with resume in hand; while others prefer and/or require an online application. Dress neatly and professionally anytime you will be meeting a prospective employer in person. If you begin with a phone interview speak clearly and be polite.

Good luck! And remember to include time for a little fun during the summer break!

Tips for Falling in Love with Your Job

Tips for Falling in Love with Your Job

Life can be hard. Between work, school and kids often your stress level is off the charts and there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in a day to get it all done. But that doesn’t mean you have to dread going to your place of employment every day. These smart tips can help you deal.

One of the biggest complaints is employees don’t feel they have achievable goals. This contributes to job monotony and lack of motivation. Combat it by creating a list of job skills you want to learn. Take a look at your current duties and see what areas can be improved upon. No matter what your title and responsibilities, there is always room for growth. Set up a meeting with your supervisor to discuss how to advance your career. He or she may not even be aware you are interested in moving up in the company.

It is often said the only thing you really control is your attitude. And while that may sound like a tired cliché, it’s true. Take a few moments during your commute to focus on being positive. Remind yourself of what you liked about your job at the beginning. Now perhaps you love interacting with guests from all over the world or the ability to work without being micro-managed. Or maybe on the really stressful days, the only thing that makes you happy is the free coffee, snacks and lunch. Often it’s the little things that get you through the day.

Keep your job in perspective in terms of your overall life. These days people work for a wide variety of reasons. Perhaps you have your main career but are also working a couple of part-time side hustles. Or maybe you’re a full-time student while also working a full-time night job as a restaurant server or hotel front desk clerk. Whatever your situation, always remember, your job is only one portion of your life and don’t allow employment negativity to overshadow the good.

Should I Go To Culinary School?

Should I Go To Culinary School?

While your life right now is pretty good, you can’t help but wonder if continuing your education wouldn’t be a smart move. Here are some important questions to consider before taking on such a commitment.

Culinary school can be costly. And while the majority of nationally recognized culinary schools offer financial aid remember those student loans will have to be paid back with interest.

Often unless you’re going into some type of highly specialized field such as medicine, law, or computer science, most employers aren’t focused on your college degree major. They just want to see you had the drive, determination and discipline to get through a two or four year college program.

Many professional chefs believe while a culinary school teaches good basic knowledge about the food and beverage industry, it doesn’t provide the solid hands-on experience that comes from actually working in a restaurant.

Thanks to a myriad of reality cooking shows students can have a false sense of what working in the restaurant business is really like. And unfortunately some culinary schools don’t do enough to dispel the fantasy that anyone can become a celebrity chef with a glamorous lifestyle. They don’t talk about the long hours, working nights, weekend and holidays, the daily boring repetition of prep work and most importantly, the low wages that come with entry level food and beverage positions.

Earning a culinary degree doesn’t automatically guarantee a top position. In fact, chances are you will be passed over for even a line cook, server or bartender position if someone with real life experience is also applying. The restaurant business is fast paced and most establishments can’t be bothered trying to train a new employee with no experience.
