Why Didn’t I Get a Call Back After My Interview?
5 Tips for Getting Hired
You aced your in-person interview and walked out knowing before you even got home there would be an offer waiting in your inbox. But that email never materialized and when you followed up all you heard was the dreaded, “Sorry, we went with another candidate.” What went wrong? Well, first things first…there is no magic formula that guarantees you get hired every time. But perhaps these basic tips will help you seal the deal.
- Make sure you sound professional. Try recording yourself so you can hear what you really sound like. A lot of “umms” and “likes” in your speech pattern? Do you hesitate and seem to be searching for words? Practice speaking clearly, concisely and with confidence.
- What does your social media look like? Posts detailing partying and inappropriate behavior? Obnoxious comments or improper political or social views? These are all things that can quickly turn a hiring manager off.
- Don’t forget the obvious. Bathe, dress professionally and leave the overpowering perfume or cologne for the clubs. Leave your phone at home or at least in the car. Sit up straight and don’t fidget. Make eye contact with and smile at the interviewer. Your body language speaks volumes about how interested you are in being hired.
- You just weren’t the right fit. Perhaps you didn’t do your homework and couldn’t answer even the basic questions about the company. Maybe you misread the job description and you really weren’t qualified for the position. If you failed a required placement test, lied about your past employment history, showed up late, or were rude to the receptionist, then that’s probably your answer right there.
- No matter how many people you interviewed with send each and every one a thank you note as soon as possible. Don’t assume the last person you met with will be one responsible for making the final decision on your future.

Is a Food and Beverage Career Right for You?
Are you a high-energy, take charge kind of person with more than a passing interest in good food prepared correctly? Then, step right up because a career in this branch of the hospitality business may be your perfect fit.
- Does sitting in a cube doing the Monday through Friday 9 to 5 scare you to death? Then the challenge of managing a coffeehouse, waiting tables at a fine dining establishment or taking on the head chef responsibilities may just be the career for you. In the food and beverage industry you’ll never be bored as no two days are ever the same.
- From the bus person to the restaurant manager, each employee is equally as valuable; and many world famous chefs and cooking show personalities got their start as a dishwasher, kitchen assistant or hostess. When it comes to the restaurant business working your way up the ladder can be the best way of learning every aspect of the business.
- There is more to a food and beverage career than working as a server, line cook or restaurant manager. If baking is your passion, consider a position as a pastry chef. Really into craft beers and exotic cocktails? Take a bartending course and you’ll soon be serving up high-octane beverages every night. The same goes for fine wines. Sommeliers are in high demand all over the United States.
- People have to eat. And even during a recession, folks will still find the means to enjoy at least one or two meals out on a regular basis, making job security huge in this industry. Plus, don’t like the place you’re working? Just look across the street. Chances are pretty good there is another café, bistro or diner with a help wanted sign in the window.
- Then as your lifestyle changes you can always segue your experience into a position as a culinary arts instructor, nutritionist or food sales representative.

Five Tips for Scoring the Perfect Service Industry Position
Whether you are searching for a hotel concierge job, want to get your foot in the door so you can work your way up to a restaurant managerial position, or need a summer server gig, these five tips can help you find the best service industry fit
- Due diligence in researching the businesses you are interested in is always a smart move. There are now specific websites that allow former and current employees to rate and review their employers. Keep an open mind, weigh the pros against the cons and then decide if that particular hotel, restaurant, deli or cafeteria is a good fit.
- Long gone are the days of walking in, filling out an application and leaving with a job. Now the majority of all service industry positions require an online application. But that doesn’t mean you can’t follow up. A day or two after clicking “send” check in with a phone call or stop by in person. This shows commitment and determination; you’re not just sitting around waiting on a phone call.
- If you are short on hands-on experience, play up your other attributes. Customer service workers need to be friendly, outgoing and demonstrate the ability to multitask. Perhaps you have been a stay-at-home mom for the last couple of years…that right there is the ultimate in multitasking as well as problem solving!
- “Dress for Success” is more than just an often heard platitude. Stay away from the trendy and the too casual. No matter how laidback the restaurant or bar, dressing professionally shows you take the interview seriously.
- It doesn’t matter what your age or the age of the person leading the interview, shake their hand, maintain eye contact and most importantly: TURN OFF YOUR PHONE or leave it in the car. Before the interview ends ask for their email address so you can sent them a follow-up thank you note.
